Race 7 Update!

Tyler Allen “Mr. Consistent” Has Another Podium Finish in the South Sound Speedway Limited Late Model Series
July 18, 2010
While two of the top three leaders, Billy Weber and Ron Schultz Jr. battled in the South Sound Speedway points championship, Tyler Allen moved into 4th place inching past Austin Hoye with another top three finish on Saturday night.

Tyler and his team struggled with the R&C Roofing Chevy all day long as the car developed a vibration that affected the handling of the car.  “With such little practice time during open practice, it was difficult to diagnose the issue.  We worked to find the cause, but were unable to before qualifying.  I just had to get up on the wheel and drive through it”.  Knowing that every position counted Allen muscled the car into qualifying and with the 3rd fastest time he moved himself into a dead heat with Hoye in the points race.  The Allen Racing team would have to fix the vibration if they were going to make the race and stay ahead of Hoye.

With the race drawing near, a bad lower ball joint was discovered and the crew went to work replacing parts.  With moments to spare they sent Allen onto the track for a quick practice before the main event.   “I knew immediately the vibration was gone, I radioed the crew and said great job, we got it back….lets go racing boys”.  Allen and the crew dialed in a few minor adjustments and the car was ready for the main event.

Starting on the outside of the 3rd row, Allen was lined up behind Hoye and surrounded by the other points leaders.  “The starts are always pretty tight, luckily it looked like the outside lane was going to move forward the fastest.”  The tension started on the first lap when the officials, unhappy with the start, threw the yellow flag.  On the restart, they kept it tight all the way to turn 4 where everyone bunched up.  Lorentzen in the 11 car lost grip hitting Allen hard enough to put a hole in his driver door, while Shultz Sr. spun towards the infield bringing out the yellow flag.

On the restart Weber hooked himself to Allen’s bumper, waiting patiently for a move to pass.  Weber set up a run down the front stretch moving inside Allen who then dove in behind to follow him through the field.
“Billy was really patient, he had a faster car and made a clean pass.  I knew I could hook up with him and we could work our way to the front.”  Weber moved under Hoye and with Allen in his mirror, they passed three cars together putting them 1st and 2nd leading the race.  Shultz Jr. hitched a ride behind Allen taking advantage of the run and advanced to 3rd.  A Yellow flag came out on lap 12 and Allen moved to restart on the inside behind Weber.   Shultz Jr. used the commitment cone and lined up outside the front row.  With a good start, Allen is in third and has the best seat in the house to watch the top points leaders battle it out.  “It was clear we had a 3rd place car, I just made sure to keep myself in position to win if they made a mistake”.  With the leaders in a groove, the race went green for the rest of the night.  Allen finished in 3rd place and secured his 4th place position in the points race.
“What a great night, the crew worked hard to fix the car, and in the end we brought home a decent finish.  We’re close, really close.  We just need to make a few more adjustments and we will be right up there.”

June 26th Race Update!

Another exciting race for the Allen Racing crew. It was a hot day at South Sound Speedway and the crew was working hard on getting the car ready for qualifying and the race. Although qualifying did not go as well as it had the past few weeks, Tyler had a good starting position outside the second row.

A rough start on the outside shuffles Tyler towards the back of the pack but with some hard racing he was able to work his way back to third place. As the race went on a long green flag run left Tyler in third with little pressure from behind. While coming up on lapped traffic on the white flag lap, the lapped car gets loose and Tyler makes contact. He was able to gather it up and finish the last lap remaining in third place and once again finishing on the podium without a right front fender!! Tyler remains 5th in points but is only 4 points out of 4th place. Take a look at the race video for the full in car recap!!

June 12th Race Update!

The University of Washington graduation ceremony just happened to fall on the day of the Limited Late Model twin main events so it proved to be an action packed day for the whole Allen Racing team. While the team got the car to the track and ready to race, Ron Wolf prepared to hop back into a race car for the first time this season as a stand in driver for qualifying.

While the crew worked to get the car ready for the evening of racing, Tyler was sitting among the thousands of graduates eagerly awaiting his walk to the stage for his diploma. The second the graduation caps were flying through the air, Tyler was sprinting for the car to get on I-5 and head down to South Sound Speedway. On the way down to the track, the team was relaying the latest news from the track. With fifteen minutes to spare, Tyler made it to the track for the start of the first main event.

Since Tyler did not drive the car during qualifying, he had to start from the back of the 16 car field. There was a lot of tight racing as the field stayed very closely grouped but Tyler was able to patiently work his way through the field. A few cautions and commitment cone restarts produced great opportunities to move up through the field, and Tyler ultimately finished 4th with a clean race car. It would not stay clean for very long...

The 4th place finish placed Tyler on the inside of the second row for race two of the night. As the field entered the middle of turns 1 and 2 the pole sitter made contact with the outside car, causing the the field to pile up. Just when we thought the 35 car was going to make it through, he made contact with one of the cars that spun, tearing off the right front fender and damaging the nose of the car. With the right front fender hanging Tyler brought the car into the pits and his crew made quick work of the damage. He made it back out onto the track in time to take the green flag from the back of the field. Able to gain a few positions in the following laps, Tyler was able to salvage a 7th place finish.

Big thanks to the Allen Racing crew, John, Mike, Ron, Jerry, and Alex, thank you for all the hard work in making such a busy day run so smooth!

5.24.10

Another exciting weekend at South Sound Speedway! The weather was not looking good for Saturday's race and actually rained out the limited late model practice. Time being an issue, track officials made the decision to run a Formula 1 style qualifying session: 10 minutes, all laps timed, adjustments allowed... Tyler went out to scuff tires and see where he sat in the field and ran a 14.09 putting him third quickest. After going to the pits to cool down the tires, and make some slight adjustments, Tyler was able to come out with a relatively clear track and run a 13.79 Fast time for qualifying!

The car was left alone for the main event as the invert put him on the outside of row 3. A crash in front of Tyler on lap 4 tore up the front end of Tyler's car. He rushed into the pits and while under caution the crew was able to very professionally duct tape the nose together. The crew got Tyler on the track just as the commitment cone came out, Tyler went high and started 8th in line. As the green flag flew hard racing up front allowed Tyler to work his way to third and then second. After running second for a number of laps, the number 1 car passed leaving Tyler in 3rd place where he finished off the remaining laps of the race. Here is another race recap video!

5.09.10

It has been a while since the last update but here it goes.

The first race of the season was rained out the weekend of April 3rd. On the 17th Tyler spent over 8 hours in Seattle taking the Fundamentals of Engineering exam ready to rush to the track and compete in the race but luckily the weather was on Tyler's side and the race was postponed until Sunday. Sunday the weather cleared and they South Sound Speedway Limited Late Models were able to complete their first race. Tyler Qualified 5th with a 14.03 and started outside of the front row. After running third for around 20 laps, Tyler had a right rear tire go down forcing him to head to the pits to change tires. The crew quickly changed the tire but left Tyler a few laps down to finish out the race in 10th place. This places Tyler tied for 7th place in the championship points.

Practice between races allowed the team to work on balancing the setup to give Tyler a better car over throughout the race. The car came off the trailer a little bit rough but the crew worked hard on the car resulting in a 3rd place qualifying position with a 13.90, Tyler's personal best. An 8 car invert Put Tyler on the outside of row 6 for the start of the race.

There was a lot of close quarters racing from the start and on lap 2 as cars checked up in front of Tyler, he had to lock up the brakes and spun into the infield. This forced him to the back of the 13 car field. In the following laps Tyler was able to work his way back up to 9th and a caution gave the 35 car a chance to use the commitment cone. A last minute decision to take the outside position on the restart proved an important decision in the final laps of the race. A good restart put Tyler in the 6th position and after making another pass 5th where he was able to finish out the race on the back bumper of the 95 car. The 35 car has been on the track twice at South Sound Speedway preparing for the 2010 season. The goal was to shake down the car and make sure there were no problems with changes made during winter. The practices went well with not major issues, and the car came off the trailer with good speed. Some changes to the track, a new style of tire, and a number of new parts on the car has made for an exciting start to the season. Join us at the season opener (pending weather) on April 3rd, at South Sound Speedway, Kids get in free! Here are some pictures from practice, hope to see you at the races!

1.14.10

The car is coming together, as a number of changes were made during the winter. A Nascar style sway bar was installed, some rear end alignment issues were resolved, and a new nose was put on the car. School has been extremely demanding but thanks to an awesome crew chief the work is moving along. Stay tuned for some pictures as we approach opening day, April 3rd, 2010 in the Limited Late Model Racing Series at South Sound Speedway.
